“I like to hang out with people who make me forget to look at my phone”.
We have become a society that is never truly present. Too often we are looking down at our phones rather than actually spending time with the people we are around. Did you know that the average person checks their phone 110 times per day, even if it isn’t ringing? Many people say their phone is something they can’t imagine living without.
For today’s challenge we are going to put the phone down and work on being present. You are only allowed to use your phone for important phone calls / texts. You may check your email (if absolutely necessary on a Sunday) once in the morning and once in the evening. Try not to use your phone for social media purposes or games today.
If you recognize that you may have a “phone addiction” and you want to push this further than just today, try these tips:
- delete all games and social media apps off of your phone
- plug your phone on the opposite side of the room so you can’t look at if before bed / right as you wake up
- start wearing a watch (if you use your phone for a clock)
- start viewing your phone as something you use for important things - texts, phone calls, directions, etc. not as a form of entertainment
Unglue yourself from your phone today. Leave it in one spot and only check if it rings. If you are spending time with friends today, encourage them to put their phones away while they are with you. Let’s see what the world has to offer us today that is not on our phone screen.
